It's true. This 4th of July will be unlike any other Independence Day we've had. Many of us may not get to enjoy the same luxuries we typically do on this day, and there is so much is on our hearts and minds. But, there is something about the smell of beef on the grill, a picnic table under the blazing July heat, and the gathering of friends and family with large appetites that makes us feel more together than apart. We hope that no matter what you do or where you are this holiday, that you get to spend the day with those you love, four-legged friends included. They like food as much as we do! Here is a festive summer treat for your dog to bring them into the fun and cool their palate. Nutritious? Yes. Simple? Yes. Tasty? Duh.
🥄 Treat Ingredients:
Strawberries (fresh or frozen)
Blueberries (fresh or frozen)
Plain Greek yogurt
Food coloring (optional)
Star Ice Cube Trays
🥄 Making the Treats:
Red // Mash strawberries (including any juice from frozen berries), add a dollop of yogurt and mix to combine. Spoon into an ice cube tray or silicon mold and freeze.
Blue // Mash blueberries (including any juice from frozen berries), add a dollop of yogurt and mix to combine. Spoon into an ice cube tray or silicon mold and freeze.
White // Mash bananas. Add yogurt. Spoon. Freeze. 🥄 Things to Consider:
Go natural. Be sure to buy yogurt that is free of artificial sweeteners, which pose a health risk for dogs. We recommend plain Greek yogurt, which is full of the good bacteria your dog's gut craves. And, if you chose to add food coloring, we like the brand Supernatural. Locally, both Walmart and Target sell naturally-derived food coloring. Progress!
Play with trays. Let's face it. Your dog isn't going to care whether these treats are stars or rectangles, or whether they're molded from silicon or plastic. But, if you consider yourself a true patriot, try these from Amazon or these from Walmart.
Freeze immediately. Be sure to keep these on ice until you serve them. These scrumptious treats will melt quickly, especially in July! They can also be messy, so serve them in a bowl or outside.
